K Dogg’s Quick Movie Review

Here’s a short review of a recent movie I’ve seen.

Movie: Cape Fear (1962)

Starring: Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum

Co-starring: Telly Savalas

Rated NR

Time: approximately 106 minutes

This is the original film version of Cape Fear starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. It was later re-made in 1991 starring Nick Nolte and Robert De Niro. In the original version the story differs slightly from the 1991 version in that Peck's character Sam Bowden is a lawyer who happens to be a witness to the rape that sent Max Cady to jail. In the 1991 version, Sam Bowden is Max Cady's defense attorney who burries evidence that might help Max beat the rap. In both versions, Max Cady is released from jail many years later, and he decides to go after Sam and his family to get his revenge. I thought this version was a good movie. I'm a big fan of Gregory Peck, mostly because of his role in To Kill a Mockingbird. I think he is one of the best good guys of all time. Due to the era of when this movie was made, the filmmakers had to tone down the violence and references to Max Cady's desire to rape Sam Bowden's young teenage daughter. This was another difference in the two versions. In the first version, Sam Bowden's daughter didn't want anything to do with Max Cady, but in the later version Max Cady seduces her for a period of time. The later version also did have the classic scene of Max De Niro laughing hystarically and smoking cigars at the movie theatre. All in all, I liked this movie and say it's worth watching. Also, check out the 1991 version, which is one of, if not, my favorite Robert De Niro movies.
