K Dogg’s Quick Movie Review
Here’s a short review of a recent movie I've seen.
Movie: Showtime
Robert De Niro plays a Los Angeles police detective named Mitch, who after an incident is forced against his will to star in a reality tv show that is somewhat like COPS. Rene Russo plays Chase, the producer of the tv show. Eddie Murphy plays a police patrolman named Trey who's real desire is to become an actor. Trey puts a stunt together that impresses Chase, so she makes Mitch and Trey partners on the tv show. I was a bit nervous about renting this movie. I've picked it up several times, but I've always left it at the movie store. Eddie Murphy hasn't made a funny movie since Coming to America or Beverly Hills Cop II, whichever is more recent. Also, I'm always leery about comedies with Robert De Niro in them. I don't like movies that make De Niro look like a chump. This movie turns out to not to be as bad as I thought it would be. Don't get the wrong idea, it is not that good of a movie either. It has a few funny things in it including William Shatner teaching De Niro's character on how to be a tv cop. I thought this movie had a flow problem. It had a couple of stories in it that they hint at but never develop. In part of the movie, I thought they would develop a love story between Russo's and De Niro's characters, but they didn't. Watching the deleted scenes on the dvd makes me feel that they just axed that story line. I got this movie as a throw in for renting another movie and I would suggest that is the only way that makes this movie worth renting.
